It's a secret we keep. We being the people over forty. Life is not the big events. Life is not seeing Mount Rushmore. Life is not watching the Baseball World Series in person. Life is rockers and recliners.
Life is those moments when the house is calm. Those sparse minutes when the dogs are content. The children are fed. Your ice tea glass is full. Those tiny glimpses of life where you can pick your poison.
You can relax in your recliner or sway to and fro in your rocker. Some people, I am told, have rocker recliners. How good life must be for them, when the quiet times come.
I have a recliner. I push back and the foot rest extends and I am happy. The phone is not ringing. The door bell is quiet. My dog doesn't have to pee and my kid's tremendous hunger is satisfied. The moment belongs to me.
When these rare times come - I sip ice tea and think. I think of my family and how I am lucky they tolerate my oddities. I think of my friends and how lucky I am they answer my calls. I even think of my dogs and how lucky I am to have such undying love from them.
It's the quiet times that make a life.
The times when it's just you and your tea.
Those are the times I cherish the most.
